The demand for energy efficient and cost effective preconstruction services has never been greater. Ensuring buildings are delivered on time and perform in line with expectation, whilst meeting industry and government regulations and targets, is a challenge the construction industry faces daily. To help combat these challenges the business is looking to hire 1 northern based Design Manager (Leeds) and 1 southern based Design Manger (London) from either a Mechanical or Electrical Building Services background to oversee and coordinate all design activities within the regional businesses.
Reporting directly to the Technical Director, you will lead a team of Technical Services Managers, Design Engineers and Revit Technicians, managing both internal and external design resources. The business operates a hybrid design model, with a blend of in-house design delivery and outsourced consultancy support, making strong leadership and coordination skills essential.
This is an office-based position.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, manage and develop a multidisciplinary design team comprising Design Engineers, Technical Services Managers and Revit Technicians.
- Ensure designs are delivered on time, within scope and to the required technical standards.
- Review, check and approve design outputs, ensuring quality, compliance and accuracy.
- Coordinate and manage internal design resources alongside external consultants and specialist design partners.
- Act as the key link between design, estimating, operations and project delivery teams.
- Monitor design programmes and resource allocation across multiple live projects.
- Drive consistency, efficiency and best practice within the design department.
- Ensure designs comply with current regulations, standards and client requirements.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineering and BIM personnel.
- Support project teams through technical problem solving and design coordination.
- Contribute to commercial awareness within project delivery, although the primary focus of the role will be technical leadership and design management.
Candidate Requirements
- Proven experience within a Design Manager, Senior Design Engineer, Principal Engineer or similar leadership role.
- Strong Mechanical or Electrical Building Services design background.
- Experience managing design teams and coordinating multiple project workloads.
- Demonstrable ability to review and validate engineering designs.
- Experience managing external consultants and outsourced design resources.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong understanding of current Building Services design standards and regulations.
